Tenacious History

when he saw this sight, he had no other choice but to help his friend in need. This youngling had lost his mother and now his tribe. He let his powerful claws smash into the earth, knocking down anyone who was too weak to handle the shaking of the earth beneath them. In a roar, he let hot red flames shoot out across the field, killing any demons that happened to be unlucky enough to stand that close. He let out a roar and flipped himself around, smacking a few demons who had stood their ground to the dirt with his tail. "Don't just stand there, you started this. It is time to end it. " With that he let out another hot burst of flame.

Tovarel leaped on another demon and chomped down over his neck. He tossed his neck back and forth until the head separated from the body. Dropping the head he took leave from the corpse and turned to another gathered group of the abominations and let loose his green flame to devour them in the heat. He continued to fight until the end of the demons was near. The final beast had fallen and he then sat in the bloody field, panting.

"Now that you have leaped into a fight, I suppose it is a little late to tell you that war is unnecessary. Do not punish a demon for being demonic punish a demon for killing what is precious to you. " He sighed and looked down to the dirty earth. "War is tragic. Do not bring more tragedy to this land. I beg you."

Tovarel grew a bit angry with the older dragon and glared at him as his attention completely turned to face him. "What would you whom hides in the wild know about this? The war has already started. I am merely the only to fight back. They have been attacking us for many cycles! All I want is to kill every demon involved with Slavacka. Any others who had nothing to do with the attack shall be spared by my fury." A low growl sounded from deep in his chest.

He smiled at this. "You are young but strong. You may even be stronger than any other dragon I have met. Conserve that strength for a greater battle though, young one. i hide because death and destruction only causes hatred to spread and i will not be one responsible for that much bloodshed. I would know of this feeling because i too lost my mother to a war. And my father and the rest of my family as well. We dragons are a powerful race but with power comes a certain need for restraint. I too wanted revenge for my parents' death and I too ran out to fight a war that was not my own. " He sighed, looking down, saddened by the story. "And it led me to a place I dare not speak of. the love of my life murdered because I wanted a little vengeance. I will not stop you from doing what you must but i warn you. " He now looked the dragon in the eyes. "The path you walk is that of a dark one. Be wary of dangers. "

He seemed to heed the words, although he wouldn't openly admit it. His head hung a bit and he began to avoid eye contact. "But...I really have nothing else to stay for. I have no family, no mate. My horns may not be very long but I can still destroy that demon..." His words were shaky and mispronounced as he was a bit confused and not sure what to do.

It was custom for a father to teach his hatch ling the way of their race but as his father died and his mother had no place in teaching, he was entirely lost in the world with no true connection. "All I have is vengeance..."

He nodded. "Well if you are truly set on that path, then I will do no more talking however, if you need teachings in combat or control, I will be your teacher as I had started teaching your flight so long ago. " With this he began to walk away in a random direction towards a clear field.

Tovarel followed him through the green forest and into the field. He observed the grass and the nature of the world around him and felt slightly at peace as the sound of insects echoed through the world while the scent of pine and wild grass filled his nose. Looking to the large silver dragon he tilted his head, "So, what exactly can you teach me?"

He let out a loud chuckle. "For one not to die when attacked by many enemies and believe me they will outnumber you at most times. " He turned in a half circle and shot back around in a quick flash of a movement. He swung his tail in a full circle. "This is good for making a parameter for the battlefield. It is very important to remember. You have a tail. Use it. " He then waited to see the replication of his technique.

With a flawed yet close imitation he readied himself to rotate and pulled it off with a little thrust near the end to further flick the tip of his tail. "Seems simple enough...." Tilting his head to one side he quickly followed the motion and repeated the process as before although this time he rotated in the opposite direction. With this small technique in place, he began to wonder what else he could do with the swift movements of his tail.

Glancing back over his broad shoulders, he eyed the tip of his tail to examine the pattern of spines growing out and the flap of leathery skin that was held in place by three fragments of cartilage on either side that helped him fly in the air. Closing the flaps at the end of his tail he decided to attempt and hit a tree as hard as possible. Making a slithering motion from his current position he eyed and tree and then rotated clockwise with his tail aimed at the tree. He hit the tree as expected but a shape pain rolled up the end of his tail and through his pine which caused him to yelp and cringe from the mistake of a move.

He chuckled, being reminded of his years of training and youth. "You will become stronger. Then it won't hurt as bad. " With this he jumped into the air and smacked the ground hard, cracking the earth with a loud smash and uprooting near by trees. "It has taken me years to perfect this but if I were you, i would not try it until you have built up a tolerance to pain. This however is a good way to take out many enemies at once." He let his claws touch back down on the now cracked grass. He then smiled at the young dragon.

Wriggling his nose at the older dragon he soon gave an odd expression before snorting smoke from his nostrils. "I remember learning about this from an elder over talking with another...I also read it from one of the wall clawings." He snorted again yet this time a spurt of deep green flames burned into the ground and suddenly the stone, grass, and dirt below them started to shift as Tovarel could bend it with nothing more than his will and the aura that dragons could spray from their mouths at a highly concentrated level. Once he was finished destroying the earth, he sneezed.

He smiled. "So does this mean you accept me as your teacher?" He waited for a reply while he swashed his tail back and forth.

The young dragon nodded. "You may not be an Elder but I guess you can teach me a few things." He started to clean the demon blood from his scales and claws by licking them with his forked tongue.

He laughed at this. "First order of business. Clean yourself. " He sat down to wait and sighed, remembering the good old days when there was no war.

After finishing this he sat up and examined his surroundings. Seeming a bit side tracked for a short period of time.

He smiled. "Ok you probably already noticed this but if you haven't I will tell you anyway. " He took a deep breath and sniffed the air. "Smell the air. What do you smell?" He was going to teach the young dragon to use his nose in the time of need. Dragons had very sensitive smell and taste. Gretchen wanted him to be able to use his nose to smell all the scents around them.

He first blinked and raised a scaly brow before he sniffed the blood scented air and flicked his forked tongue, tasting the blood of demons and smoldering skin. "It smells like war." He continued to have a blank expression that was now intensely focused on his master to be.

He shook his big head and said "Yes it does smell like war but what else do you smell?" He wanted the hatchling to focus on the less obvious things that seemed to not matter. In his eyes, every scrap of dirt was important. That is what he had been taught as well.

Tovarel did not quite understand the question but for a long time; even days perhaps, he pondered the meaning of his Master's plan and would continue to give very obvious scents that the most hornless of all creatures would be able to find. It was frustration for him and even with the patients of a dragon, he was ready to give up. Sitting back with an irritated look in his eyes, he grumbled. "I don't smell anything other than regular things. I don't understand the point in this either. Shouldn't you be teaching me the ways of a dragon? Like how to use the full extent of my flame...or using my claws to tear apart a boulder. Something like all the stories from before the demons took Sulfura from us."

He chuckled a large whooping laugh and smiled at his young pupil. "Those stories were legends even if they were true those dragons went through the same trials as you are now. You cannot be born into a great tree. You must first start as a seed. That seed grows with time, patience, and care. As in, take care of your training and with patience and time, you will grow into a mighty dragon. The reason for this training is to allow you to know when your opponent is near. If there is sulfur around, there is fire or magma and you know that this direction is unsafe. A dragon's senses are all equally important not just the tooth and claw. Do you understand, youngling?" With this he took a big sniff and smiled. "As of now, I know everything there is to know of this land. Why? Because I used my senses. Now what else other than the obvious is around you. Close your eyes and smell."

The young green scaled dragon did as he was told and took in the moisture of the air and examined it with his sense of smell. Taking heed to the words of the older dragon, he expected to smell things of all around him. He quickly started to grasp everything and noticed how much could be located in one place. It surprised him a bit and he came back into a normal focus. "Oh..."

"Once you have become familiar with your senses, all of them, you will become ever more unbeatable. " He said this with a wide toothy grin on his jaw.

He spent some more time meditating the use of his senses but eventually grew weary and decided it would be best for him to sleep. Using his claws to tear out the grass and roots of nearby trees, he made somewhat of a crater. Next he jumped into the crater and wriggled around, using his scales as a make-shift shovels to further dig out the pit. Once he was satisfied with the size and shape of the hole, he stepped out and with a long inhale of fresh air, released a long plume of green flame that seemed to ignite the sand and partly creating red hot glass that was perfect to be his bed for the night. With the bed in place, he slithered into the warm emberes of sleep's embrace. His dreams were full of flight and hunt, which were odd for someone who was so head-strong on vengeance.

After the young dragon fell asleep, Gretchen took flight to his own home. It only took seconds for they were not far from his domain. He landed in the hole in the roof and let a ripple of flame heat the ground as he landed, relaxing and falling fast asleep. He slept well that night however his dreams were filled with visions of past endeavors and worries of the future. He had wondered if the young one would be safe and if his training was well enough.
